In a recent interview on the Off The Record podcast, Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, the founder of the Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church (SPAC Nation), sparked conversation by referring to popular Nigerian musician Davido as a “gospel artist.” The flamboyant pastor explained his view that the term “gospel” simply means “good news,” asserting that Davido embodies this through his music, particularly his song “Because I Stand Strong.”
Adegboyega’s comments came in defense of his decision to feature secular musicians, including Davido, at his recent birthday celebration instead of gospel artists. The pastor explained that the event was a personal gathering with friends, who have supported him through thick and thin. He emphasized that these musicians were not paid for their performances, noting that they performed out of love and friendship.
In his defense, Adegboyega criticized some gospel artists for being quick to judge his decisions rather than fostering relationships. “If gospel artists aren’t my friends and are instead joining the bandwagon to criticize me, what should I do?” he remarked, adding that the artists who performed at his event were his friends, and he would continue to offer them platforms.
The pastor also spoke fondly of Nigerian artist Zlatan, whom he referred to as a “son” and described his bond with the musician as familial. “Zlatan is like a son to me; his kids are my kids, and his parents were in my house,” he said.
Looking ahead, Adegboyega promised that his events would continue to be centered around his friends, adding, “My friends will always sing at my events, and the next one will be bigger because my friends list is getting bigger.”
