Ololade Oludotun, a Nigerian filmmaker, won the 2023 Native Shorts Creatives Competition with his short film “Lost But Found.”
In the movie, a young girl recounts her experience overcoming the challenges of life while shouldering significant home chores that prevented her from attending school and increased her risk of child marriage and motherhood.
But the young woman finds her calling in painting while working as a street vendor, and she overcomes her challenge with courage and pure willpower.
In response to the achievement, Oludotun said in a statement on Friday, June 23, “I am encouraged; to win a global award at a time of global crises when women and young girls everywhere face an immense range of challenges – from the threat of gender-based violence to the inability to access food, education, and employment – feels like a tremendous honor and an equally tremendous responsibility to do more advocacy with my films.
“We will be able to advance society as a whole the sooner any nation realizes girl children are as equally important and that the lack of women in leadership roles holds back not only women but all people.”
Oludotun has also directed several films, including “Stupid Finder,” which had its official YouTube debut in May 2022 thanks to the backing of the Lagos State Government and EbonyLife Creative Academy, owned by renowned media mogul, Mo Abudu.
