Veteran Nollywood composer and singer, Stanley Okorie, has opened up about his past marriages and personal growth in a candid interview with Chude Jideonwo.
Discussing his two failed marriages, Okorie acknowledged his own shortcomings, particularly in his first marriage, which ended in divorce due to his insensitivity. He admitted that his intense focus on his music career led him to neglect his wife’s needs.
“My first divorce was the most painful. The first cut is always the deepest. I was a very insensitive husband and I blame myself for that,” Okorie confessed. He recounted instances where he failed to show care and attention, such as forgetting his wife’s birthday and prioritizing his studio work over her needs. He added, “I thought providing for the family was enough, but the first rule of love is presence.”
Okorie revealed that his first wife was not after money, often leaving it untouched on the table, highlighting that her unmet need was his presence and attention. Reflecting on his younger self, he admitted, “If I had been more mature, I would have realized the importance of balancing work and family life.”
His second marriage also faced tragedy with the loss of his wife and son. Okorie used music as an escape from his grief but later understood that confronting his problems directly was necessary for true healing. “Some of the songs I sing were my escape from my sad reality, but there’s no better method of dealing with a problem than confronting it,” he explained.
Despite the past difficulties, Okorie expressed contentment with his current life. “I’m happy now where I am. I’m happily married with kids, doing well, and still recording music,” he said.
Okorie’s story underscores the importance of balance in life and relationships, a lesson he has learned through personal experience and growth.
