Val Kilmer, celebrated Hollywood actor and beloved star of the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, has died at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed to the New York Times on Tuesday that the cause of death was pneumonia.

The iconic actor, best known for his role as the confident and stoic fighter pilot Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun, enjoyed a prolific career marked by memorable performances, on-set conflicts, and a fierce dedication to his craft.

Kilmer rose to fame as Iceman, opposite Tom Cruise’s Maverick, captivating audiences with his charismatic presence and sharp delivery. Throughout the 1990s, he remained one of Hollywood’s most prominent leading men, starring in hit films such as The Doors (1991), where he portrayed legendary rock star Jim Morrison, and Batman Forever (1995), where he took on the iconic role of the Caped Crusader.

His remarkable career also saw him appear alongside Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in the 1995 crime epic Heat, and in Quentin Tarantino’s True Romance (1993). However, despite his successes, Kilmer became known for being a challenging figure on set, earning a reputation that often overshadowed his undeniable talent.

In 2014, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer, which significantly impacted his health and left him with a raspy voice after undergoing a tracheotomy. Despite his struggles, he made a triumphant comeback in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), reprising his iconic role as Iceman. The film honored Kilmer’s real-life health challenges while celebrating his legacy within the Top Gun universe.

In 2021, Kilmer’s documentary Val premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, offering an intimate portrayal of his rise to fame and subsequent health struggles. The film showcased his resilient spirit and passion for art, music, and storytelling, despite his physical limitations.

Hollywood heavyweights have paid tribute to Kilmer’s enduring legacy. Renowned filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, who directed Kilmer in Twixt, described him as “a wonderful person to work with and a joy to know.” Heat director Michael Mann praised his versatility, calling his passing “tremendously sad news.”

The official Top Gun social media account also honored him, sharing a photo of Kilmer as Iceman and describing him as an actor who left an “indelible cinematic mark.”

Born on December 31, 1959, Kilmer began acting in commercials as a child and went on to become the youngest person ever accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School’s drama department. He maintained a passion for various art forms throughout his life, including poetry, music, and wildlife conservation.

Reflecting on his life and career, Kilmer once described himself as having led a “magical life,” filled with creativity and exploration. He is survived by his two children, Mercedes and Jack Kilmer.

Val Kilmer’s legacy will endure as a testament to his remarkable talent and unwavering spirit, both on and off the screen.
