Gospel Singer Sola Allyson Responds to Criticism Over Omission of “Jesus” in Her Songs

Popular Nigerian gospel singer, Sola Allyson, has addressed criticism from social media users who accused her of not mentioning the name “Jesus” in any of her songs.

The controversy began after legendary gospel artist Panam Percy Paul shared a personal story during an interview, recounting how he was offered £24 million in 1995 to remove the name “Jesus” from his songs. The interview sparked online conversations, with some netizens scrutinizing Allyson’s music.

One user, identified as @Folahanayo1 on X (formerly Twitter), called out the singer by referencing her 2019 album IRI, claiming that none of the eight tracks, totaling 48 minutes, mentioned the name “Jesus.” The user wrote, “A whole album and not a single mention of Jesus. Throughout the entire album, the name ‘Jesus’ is not mentioned once. (Correct me if I’m mistaken). Not even in Track 8 where you talked about who you ‘Gbekele.’”

Responding to the backlash in a video on X, Sola Allyson questioned the motives behind the criticism, expressing her dismay at the hostility she has faced. She stated that she does not want to be associated with what she described as their own version of “Jesus.”

“Why are you people this callous and unkind? Is it until I commit suicide? If this is what you are with your own Jesus, I do not want to be identified with you lots! Once again, no one can bully me into joining their darkness that looks like light because indolent souls find comfort in it. I do NOT seek to be with your kind of Jesus. Leave me alone and face your own journey,” she said.

Allyson emphasized that her music remains a reflection of her personal faith and values, and she will not allow social media criticism to dictate her artistic expression.
