Popular Lagos socialite and businessman, Emeka Okonkwo, widely known as E-Money, was released on Tuesday evening after hours of questioning by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The flamboyant figure was arrested on Monday night at his residence in the Omole area of Lagos and transported to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja for interrogation. His arrest followed allegations of Naira abuse and defacing foreign currencies, particularly for allegedly spraying United States dollars—an act which contravenes the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Act.
Confirming his return to freedom, E-Money took to his Instagram handle, @iam_emoney1, where he shared a video captioned, “No tension, everywhere good, I see all your love and support. God bless you all.” The video, which showed him seated regally, played the gospel song “Thank you for saving me, thank you my Lord” in the background.
Attempts to get an official confirmation of his release from EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale were unsuccessful as calls and messages remained unanswered at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, fellow celebrity and nightlife entrepreneur, Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, also celebrated the news of E-Money’s release. Posting via his Instagram handle, @Cubana_ChiefPriest, he wrote: “My brother don fall out, To God be the glory.”
An EFCC source who spoke anonymously confirmed E-Money’s arrest, stating, “On Monday night, we arrested E-Money for Naira abuse and defacing of foreign currencies. He allegedly sprayed U.S. dollars, which violates the Foreign Exchange Act. Preliminary investigations are ongoing, and he will be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.”
The incident has since sparked reactions across social media, with fans and celebrities expressing support for the businessman.
