Osogbo, Nigeria – The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Professor Clement Adebooye, has mandated newly admitted students to take advantage of the Federal Government’s student loan program facilitated by the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). This directive aims to cushion the impact of the ongoing economic challenges in the country.

Speaking during the university’s 18th Matriculation Ceremony, held on Friday at the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Auditorium, Main Campus, Osogbo, Professor Adebooye emphasized the importance of the loan scheme for easing the financial burden on students. He assured the matriculating students of a conducive academic environment and the timely completion of their courses.

Addressing the audience, he said, “I must seize this opportunity to highlight the Federal Government’s student loan initiative through NELFUND. This intervention aims to alleviate the economic strain on students and their families. In view of this, the university management has made it mandatory for all newly admitted students to apply for the loan to enhance their learning experience and ensure a smooth academic journey.”

The Vice-Chancellor revealed that the university admitted 11,000 students for the 2024 academic session from a pool of over 30,000 applicants, underscoring the competitive nature of the admission process.

“It is noteworthy that more than 30,000 candidates sought admission to UNIOSUN this year. Out of this number, only 11,000 were admitted across various academic programs and campuses. This demonstrates your exceptional potential and underscores your privilege as part of the fortunate one-third selected for admission,” he stated.

Professor Adebooye charged the new students to remain focused and committed to their academic pursuits, reminding them that successful completion of their programs requires diligence and resilience.

“The journey you are embarking on is one of competence building and knowledge acquisition. It entails regular lectures, assignments, tests, examinations, and character development. However, not everyone who starts this journey completes it. It is your responsibility to ensure you emerge as graduates of integrity and excellence,” he remarked.

He also reiterated the institution’s zero-tolerance policy on social vices, stressing the importance of maintaining high moral standards. “At UNIOSUN, we uphold the values of integrity, discipline, and moral uprightness. Social vices such as examination malpractice, cultism, indecent dressing, drug abuse, sexual harassment, and truancy are strictly condemned,” he added.

As the newly admitted students begin their academic journey, the Vice-Chancellor urged them to embrace the opportunities presented by the Federal Government’s loan scheme and to work tirelessly to achieve their academic and personal goals.

The ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the students, as the institution continues to prioritize academic excellence, character development, and national progress.
