Fees for undergraduate students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos, have been raised. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, noted during the meeting, “It is no longer news that the University of Lagos tuition has not changed in the last 20 years, but the cost of managing education has skyrocketed astronomically.”
Previously, students at the college paid N19,000, but management has set new tuition at N190,250 for students studying medicine, and N140,250 for degrees requiring laboratory and studio work.
The cost of programs that do not require a lab or a studio is fixed at N100,750.
This was said in a statement issued by the Senior employees Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) UNILAG branch on July 20, 2023, following a meeting with top management employees.
According to SSANU, on Thursday, July 20th, the VC met with representatives of the three non-academic staff unions to discuss concerns involving members’ welfare. During the meeting, the VC announced that costs for UNILAG undergraduate students would be raised.
“The proposed fees for UNILAG undergraduate students were revealed. Students without lab and studio access will pay N100,750, those with lab access will pay N140,250, and those in college of medicine will pay N190,250,” according to the statement.
According to the statement, Rasaki Yusuf, an SSANU representative at the conference, requested an adjustment for university employees with children.
However, the VC stated that the new fees were set nationally and could not be amended for specific student groups.
Ogunsola, on the other hand, offered workers the option of paying in instalments with the condition that they pay up one month before final exams.
Other problems discussed at the conference were hostel accommodation for staff wards, for which the VC pledged that a percentage of accommodation for their wards would be reserved but did not ensure that all staff children would be assigned to a hostel.
During the meeting, the staff unions also presented a list of demands, including overtime, shift allowance, hazard allowance implementation, staff medical screening, stagnation, the status of UNILAG International School instructors, and the case of one employee, Dr Arinye.
