A motion to force the federal government to make the secondary school examination for all Nigerians free in 2023–2024 was denied by the House of Representatives.
The MPs resisted Anamero Dekeri’s motion, which demanded that the federal government waive the fees for WAEC, NECO, and JAMB for this academic year.
Nigerians are still protesting the MPs’ decision to spend billions on official vehicles at the time of this motion.
Dekeri stated in the motion that the federal government need to assist low-income households as it has already saved money by eliminating the petroleum subsidy.
The member suggested that the Ministry of Education offer the exams at no cost.
“Urge the Ministry of Education to declare the 2023 and 2024 WAEC, NECO and JAMB examinations registration-free to enable the common man to have a direct benefit of fuel subsidy removal palliatives,” Dekeri’s prayer reads.
The measure encountered strong resistance from House members after it was presented.
Julius Ihonvbere, the majority leader, proposed an amendment suggesting that lawmakers should pay for the free examination in its place. Ado Doguwa, however, opposed the change, arguing that members are already covering the costs.
Awaji Abiante moved a resolution for the House to step it down after a lengthy debate, and it was approved by a unanimous vote.
