The Lagos State Government has justified its decision to increase boarding fees in public model colleges, emphasizing that the hike is essential for improving the welfare of students.
In a statement released on Monday by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Ganiu Lawal, explained that the current boarding fee of N35,000, unchanged since 2021, is no longer sufficient to cover the rising costs associated with student care in 2024.
Lawal noted that while boarding students make up less than one percent of the total student population in public schools across the state, the N100,000 fee for the upcoming 2024/2025 academic session, starting on September 15, 2024, is necessary to ensure proper student welfare, including meals, janitorial services, and other essential needs.
“While some parents have expressed concerns about the increase, the welfare of our children remains a top priority for the Ministry and the Lagos State Government. This decision, though difficult, was made to ensure students receive the care they deserve,” Lawal stated.
He further highlighted that the schools bear energy costs for fuel and cooking gas, which are critical for student meals, adding that the new fee structure remains competitive when compared with other public boarding schools across the country.
“Providing nutritious meals is crucial not only for physical growth but also for mental alertness, and we cannot compromise on this,” he emphasized, urging parents to cooperate with the government for the sake of their children’s well-being.
Lagos State offers free education in 1,021 primary schools, 369 junior secondary, and 329 senior secondary schools, including 32 model colleges, where boarding facilities are available.
