The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has established a National Minimum Tolerable Score of 140, 100, and 100 for admission to universities, polytechnics, and institutes of education, respectively. Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar, announced this on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at the 2023 Policy Meeting of Tertiary Institutions in Abuja.
He stated that each postsecondary institution must maintain its own minimum level, particularly in terms of institutional screening and grading in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE), which must not be less than 50 marks.
“All institutions must adhere to this bare minimum. This means that no institution may fall short of the mark. The 140 is sacred and must not be breached by the 15 private universities that seek between 120 and 130 as minimum points.
“This is because the system put in place will not recognize 139,” he explained. Oloyede also stated that institutions must not charge candidates more than N2,000 as screening costs.
