The council of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has approved a N30 million grant for the host communities, the university’s vice-chancellor, Nnenna Oti, revealed yesterday.
According to Oti, the council approved the establishment of the Host Community Scholarship Scheme, which will provide N10 million annually to 100 students at a cost of N100,000.
The Poverty Allocation Project, which she described as the second phase, will provide N10 million yearly to the school’s ten host villages and N100,000 to each of the 100 impoverished women and youth.
On the other hand, she declared that N10 million would be granted yearly for a cooperative host community project in the third face, which was a community development initiative. She did, however, clarify that in this instance, the host towns will select the initiative of their choosing.
She thinks that doing this will improve links between the school and the communities it is hosting.
5,091 students will be convoked by the school on Saturday to commemorate the combined graduation ceremony of the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 academic sessions, which have been disrupted by the prolonged Academic Staff Union of University strike.
Regarding the graduates according to degree class, Oti reported that 57 students would graduate with first-class degrees, 1,086 with second-class upper, 2,477 with second-class lower, and 245 with third-class, for a total of 3, 865 graduates for the 2020–2021 set. In contrast, 63 students graduated with first-class honours in 2021–2022, 591 with second-class upper, 544 with second-class lower, and 28 with third-class, totaling 1,226 graduate students.
