Students of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko in Ondo State on Friday staged a peaceful protest over the prolonged strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
The students stormed the major highway at the main entrance of the Institution chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards with inscriptions such as— “Revitalize our Education” “End ASUU Strike” and “Save our future”.
The President of the Students’ Union Government, SUG Kolade Ogunsanmi bemoaned the continued ASUU strike saying the incessant closure of public universities had retarded the standard of the education sector urging both ASUU and the Federal Government to come to terms.
A law student Seyifunmi Adeosun however appealed to the state Governors to intervene.
On Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to consider the plight of students and call off the ongoing strike.
The president also called on the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to exercise patience as the federal government works on resolving the crisis.
Buhari made the appeal on Thursday at the 19th National Productivity Day Celebration at the statehouse conference centre, Abuja.
The president said he had, on February 1, directed Ibrahim Gambari, his chief of staff; Adamu Adamu, minister of education; and Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, to work together to address the concerns of the union.
