Three of the ten people who were kidnapped on January 7 from an estate in Sagwari Layout, Dutse, Abuja, are said to have been killed by the kidnappers as a stern warning to their family who were negotiating a ransom payment.
This happened concurrently with reports that the bandits had raised their demands from N60 million per victim to N100 million, or a total of N700 million. Locals claimed that the victims were murdered because of the abductors’ ‘delay’ in collecting the ransom.
According to information obtained by Vanguard, one of the deceased was 13-year-old Folorunsho Ariyo, a high school student.
It wasn’t until Sunday that rumours surfaced that the kidnappers, who were also active in a few Bwari villages, had murdered one of the six victims to pressure the family into paying the requested ransom as soon as possible.
Driven to breaking point, Sagwari Layout locals have finalized preparations for a large-scale demonstration against what they see as the government’s and security services’ incompetence in rescuing their family members.
Due to Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the demonstration that was originally scheduled for Monday was moved to Tuesday.
