A list of Nigerian institutions that are not authorized to operate has been made public by the National Institutions Commission (NUC). The list was included in a notification that indicated the government has shut down the impacted universities and is undergoing an inquiry, and Chris Maiyaki, the acting secretary of the NUC, signed it.

The notice that is appended to the list states that the federal government has not granted licenses to the listed universities. It further stated that anyone who attends or earns a degree from an unlicensed university does so at their own risk.

The message also warned that college certifications would not be accepted for employment, NYSC, or post-secondary education.

Channels TV reports that Maiyaki verified on Wednesday that there had been several arrests made concerning the operations of the unofficial universities. According to Maiyaki, the Department of State Services (DSS) was complicit in the crackdown on unlicensed establishments.

Following an investigative article by journalist Umar Audu that revealed a phoney certificate syndicate from Benin Republic and Togo that several Nigerians were supporting, the correction was made.

Professor Tahir Mamman, the minister of education, announced on Wednesday that Benin and Togo will not be the only nations targeted by the federal government’s sanctions and crackdown on bogus results; other nations including Uganda, Kenya, and the Niger Republic would also be included.
