In response to recent cases of kidnapping and victim abduction associated with cult activities, the Enugu State Government has declared war on cultism in the state. Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command has announced that it has detained over 53 criminals who are believed to be part of covert cults that are responsible for the abduction incidents that have been occurring in the state.
The police reaffirmed that there was no reason for anyone who planned to return for the Christmas holiday to be afraid and that the state was safe for investment and business.
During a briefing in Enugu on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police of the Enugu State Police Command, Kanayo Uzuegbu, provided reassurance and also highlighted the police’s recent successes in avoiding crime.
To instil fear and anxiety in the minds of the locals, he went on to refute the majority of the purported kidnapping incidents that had been shared on social media, calling them fake news supported by pranksters who, in his words, “exaggerate and blow cases of nighttime abduction and carjacking, most of which were not recent occurrences, out of proportion.”
According to CP Uzuegbu, the main goal of the false news vendors was to undermine the effective efforts being made by the state’s police, government, and other security organizations to combat both current and new crimes.
However according to the Police Commissioner, some of the isolated incidents of nighttime security breaches were abductions rather than kidnappings, and the actions were carried out by covert cults.
However, he said that the Command’s anti-cult unit had been activated and put on standby to pursue the cultists and use harsh tactics to drive them out of the state.
CP Uzuegbu assured that the directive would be carried out exactly as directed, praising Governor Peter Mbah for his administration’s support of the Command and stating that he had the governor’s approval and full support to “ruthlessly deal with and rid the state of unrepentant cultists and their criminal activities.”
“It is on that note that I crave your indulgence to use this opportunity to once again thank the Governor for all the support his administration has been giving to the Police, and his commitment to enthrone a peaceful, safe, secured and economically prosperous Enugu State,” the commissioner said.
The police chief urged people to continue reporting criminal activity to the closest police station, warning cultists to repent or face the consequences.
“With the Christmas and New Year festivities around the corner, I want to assure the good people of the state, especially those that will be coming back to celebrate the season with their loved ones of adequate security,” the commissioner added.
Along with other weaponry, some of the dangerous objects found on the thugs’ property were 28 firearms, 30 live ammo, 66 live cartridges, 25 cars, 16 motorcycles, cell phones, cash in naira, and military uniforms.
