The Nigerian Army has intensified its fight against illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta, deactivating 42 illicit refining sites and arresting 29 suspected oil thieves in operations from December 9 to 15, 2024.
In a statement by the acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 6 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah, the Army reported the seizure of 197,000 litres of stolen petroleum products. The operations also led to the destruction of key infrastructure used for illegal activities, including 32 boats, 12 vehicles, and eight motorcycles.
The Army’s operations focused on Bayelsa, Rivers, and Delta States, targeting major crude oil theft hotspots and curbing environmental damage. Notable successes included the deactivation of illegal sites in Yenagoa, Bayelsa, where over 37,000 litres of stolen crude were recovered. Further actions in Rivers and Delta States also resulted in significant seizures and dismantling of bunkering operations.
