The Akwa Ibom State Police Command rescued two accused robbers from lynching by an enraged mob. SP Odiko Macdon, the command’s spokesperson, said in a statement on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, that the suspects were accused of stealing drinks and a generator.
According to the PPRO, one of the suspects, Ubong Sunny Ossom of Ikot Edebe village in Nsit Atai LGA, was going to be burned alive when the police patrol team came. He was suspected of stealing two bottles of Campari from Godslight Supermarket in Ekpene Ukim, Uruan LGA.
Similarly, Christian Effiong of Nung Atai Okobo village in Okobo LGA was saved by police officials as he was going to be burned alive after stealing a generator from Mount Zion Church Ikot Ambon in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA.
“Whereas the command condemns in totality the act of stealing, which is a crime, subjecting the perpetrators to jungle justice is not in tandem with our legal system,” he stated.
He stated that the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, has ordered criminals to stop immediately or face arrest and prosecution.
Unfortunately, a suspected tricycle robber was not so fortunate, as he was set ablaze by teenagers on Tuesday, July 18 at Ntak Inyang in the state’s Esit Eket Local Government Area.
According to Donnell Akpaesu, an eyewitness, the suspect attacked a Keke rider and stole his tricycle.
He was, however, overwhelmed by community youths and set ablaze.
