The Anambra Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reports that in the previous six months, 136 more drug traffickers were detained and 79 drug traffickers were found guilty.
The agency’s state commander, Mr. Daniel Onyishi, revealed this on Saturday in Awka during a celebration of the 2023 World Drug Day.
Onyishi reported that the command engaged adolescents from all 21 Local Government Areas, seized 883.347 kilograms of illegal substances, and treated 25 patients.
He claimed that during that time, the command ran enlightenment programs in churches, secondary schools, and institutes of higher study.
He said that the successes were made possible by the agency’s chairman, retired brigadier general Mohammed Buba Marwa, who provided morale and logistical support.
According to the state commissioner for education Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Ude, substance misuse is a cankerworm that should be avoided by everyone with a clear head.
In her opening remarks, Chuma-Ude claimed that drug addiction turns people into “vegetables” and causes the addict’s family and society to shun him or her. She pleaded with the children to avoid drug use because it offers no benefits.
In a message of goodwill, Prof. Okechukwu Esimone, Vice Chancellor (VC), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, advised the youth, particularly students, to resist being persuaded by anyone to use illegal substances.
Dr. Angela Ufele, Director of Academic and Planning at UNIZIK, spoke on behalf of Esimone and said that drug misuse has a negative influence on the workforce.
In a brief talk, clinical psychology professor Prof. Mike Ezenwa counseled NDLEA to develop proactive strategies to combat the problem of drug misuse and trafficking.
The year 2023 will be celebrated under the subject “People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.” The War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) launched by the Chairman of the NDLEA, Marwa, who was represented by Mr. Samila Etta, Zonal Commander, Owerri, was the event’s high point.
