President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his joy and optimism following the successful restart of operations at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company, which resumed full operations on Monday, December 30, 2024. This milestone marks a significant achievement for Nigeria’s energy sector and a key victory for the administration’s efforts to revitalize the nation’s oil refining capacity.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for completing the rehabilitation of the refinery, which had been dormant for several years. The refinery, with a capacity of 125,000 barrels per day (bpd), is now operating at 60 percent capacity, further boosting Nigeria’s refining capabilities.
The President highlighted that the successful reopening of the Warri Refinery is a major step forward in his administration’s plan to enhance energy security and efficiency. He expressed confidence that this development would strengthen public trust in his government’s ability to deliver on promises made to the Nigerian people.
“The restart of Warri Refinery today brings joy and gladness to me and Nigerians. This will further strengthen the hope and confidence of Nigerians for a greater and better future than we promised,” President Tinubu said. “This is a remarkable way to end the year, following the earlier feat with the Port Harcourt Refinery.”
The Warri Refinery will primarily produce and store vital products such as straight-run kerosene (SRK), automotive gas oil (AGO), and both heavy and light naphtha. The President also praised Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, and his team for their dedication to restoring Nigeria’s stature as a leading oil-producing nation.
Tinubu also urged NNPCL to accelerate the rehabilitation of other refineries, including the Kaduna Refinery and the 150,000 bpd second refinery in Port Harcourt, to further solidify Nigeria’s role as a major energy provider on the global stage.
The reopening of the Warri Refinery follows the successful restart of the Port Harcourt Refinery, which resumed operations on November 26, 2024, marking a strong finish to the year for Nigeria’s energy sector.
