NNPC Overhauls Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna Refineries, Invites Obasanjo for Inspection

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced that the ongoing rehabilitation of the 150,000 barrels per day (bpd) Port Harcourt Refinery and Kaduna Refinery is a comprehensive overhaul designed to meet global standards, rather than the routine Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) of the past.

The 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt Refinery and Warri Refinery, which have already undergone rehabilitation, are now being upgraded to ensure world-class operational standards, according to the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Soneye.

This statement came in response to recent remarks by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who questioned the viability and operational status of the rehabilitated Port Harcourt and Warri refineries. Obasanjo alleged that the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) had earlier advised against the Port Harcourt Refinery’s viability due to corruption and accused NNPC Ltd. of misleading Nigerians regarding the state of its refineries.

In a press release, Soneye emphasized the progress achieved under NNPC Ltd.’s leadership, stating that the company is committed to ensuring its refineries operate at global standards to sustain Nigeria’s energy needs. He further invited Obasanjo to visit the rehabilitated facilities to witness the progress made.

“We extend an invitation to our esteemed former president to join us in this historic journey,” Soneye said. “His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his insights and guidance.”

Highlighting NNPC Ltd.’s transformation, Soneye noted that the company has evolved from a loss-making entity into a profit-oriented global energy leader, now operating as a private entity. He credited this progress to the leadership of the NNPC Ltd. board and the management team, led by Group Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari, alongside President Bola Tinubu’s transformative energy policies.

“Our focus extends beyond harnessing traditional resources,” Soneye stated, “to developing cleaner, cheaper, and sustainable energy solutions that meet Nigeria’s growing demands.”

This overhaul aligns with NNPC Ltd.’s mission to become an integrated energy company, expanding its operations beyond oil and gas while maintaining a commitment to global best practices.

The company reaffirmed its dedication to national development and acknowledged Obasanjo’s role as a respected statesman whose contributions to Nigeria’s progress are highly valued.

This latest development underscores NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to redefining Nigeria’s energy landscape and addressing the nation’s energy needs through innovation and sustainability.
