The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the first batch of locally assembled Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transportation.
The buses, produced by Lanre Shittu Motors, were received by officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. The event was led by the Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, and featured the unveiling of the buses as a part of the ongoing transformation of the nation’s airport infrastructure.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management, Festus Keyamo, highlighted the significance of the deployment, noting that it aligns with the directive of President Bola Tinubu. “What you see here today is a fleet of CNG buses for FAAN to commence passenger movement at all our airports immediately,” Keyamo stated, emphasizing that the initiative is a key part of Nigeria’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and meeting global climate targets.
The new buses, introduced at the Lagos airport, offer a range of environmentally friendly features, with zero emissions. They are also equipped with accessibility features for individuals with disabilities. Keyamo added that the shift to CNG-powered vehicles supports the President’s vision to reduce the country’s dependence on traditional fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel, while promoting the adoption of CNG as a sustainable energy source.
The introduction of these buses is also part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to mitigate the economic impact of fuel subsidy removal on citizens. In his remarks, Taiwo Shittu, Managing Director of Lanre Shittu Motors, revealed that the buses come in two variants: a 31-seater designed for airport shuttles and a 54-seater intended for mass transit in urban areas. Both models are equipped with modern amenities such as air conditioning, viewing screens, and charging ports, enhancing passenger convenience.
This move marks a step forward in the country’s transportation sector, offering a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to traditional fuels.
