Nigeria has further solidified its influence in the global energy sector with the appointment of Mr. Ademola Adeyemi-Bero as Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for 2025. The announcement was made following the 189th OPEC Conference, where Adeyemi-Bero, Nigeria’s OPEC Governor, was confirmed in the prestigious role.
In a statement published on OPEC’s official website, the conference also appointed Eng. Adeeb Al-Aama, OPEC Governor from Saudi Arabia, as Alternate Chairman for the same period. Adeyemi-Bero’s appointment highlights Nigeria’s growing role in shaping energy policies globally and emphasizes the country’s strategic influence within OPEC.
Prior to his new role as Chairman, Adeyemi-Bero was already confirmed as Nigeria’s OPEC Governor for 2025. His appointment is seen as a significant milestone, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to promoting balanced energy policies that benefit both oil producers and consumers worldwide.
In response to the announcement, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, extended his congratulations to Adeyemi-Bero. He described the appointment as a testament to Nigeria’s active contributions to the global oil industry, providing the country with an influential platform to advocate for energy policies that support the global economy.
Senator Lokpobiri also commended Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, the outgoing Nigerian OPEC Governor, for his exemplary service and pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC.
The OPEC Conference also extended the tenure of Haitham Al Ghais as the organization’s Secretary-General for another three years, effective August 1, 2025. Member nations acknowledged Al Ghais’s exceptional leadership and the Secretariat’s steadfast commitment to the organization’s goals.
This appointment underscores Nigeria’s leadership position in the global energy dialogue and its continued impact on shaping energy policies worldwide.
