The Federal Ministry of Environment has initiated measures to eliminate single-use plastics in the country. The move involves ceasing the single-use of plastics at the Ministry of Environment’s headquarters in Abuja, marking the beginning of this impactful environmental campaign.
The decision emerged from a two-day ministerial/top management retreat held in Kaduna with the theme, ‘Policy Embedment and Synergy of Prioritised Action for a Renewed Hope in Environmental Management.’
During the retreat, a “Circular Nigeria Committee” was established, chaired by Prof. Aliyu Jauro, the Director-General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency. This committee is tasked with executing the circular economy roadmap and gradually phasing out single-use plastics across the nation, starting from the ministry and its affiliated agencies.
The objective of the campaign is to ensure sustainable waste management and implement effective strategies outlined in the circular economy roadmap. The retreat also emphasised discontinuing the use of single-use plastics within the Federal Ministry of Environment and its agencies to instil a waste reduction culture.
At the retreat, staff members of the ministry were urged to lead by example in implementing personal climate actions in their surroundings. The procurement plans will be promptly completed and submitted to relevant government agencies for the timely release of funds to support these initiatives.
The retreat reinforces the importance of forest guards to align with the President’s vision of eliminating bandits from the nation’s forests. The ministerial retreat brought together 83 delegates from various departments, agencies, programs, and special projects of the ministry, along with key stakeholders from government offices, the Bureau of Public Procurement, and development partners.
