Dangote Refinery Halts Petrol Unit After Technical Glitch, Repairs to Last Two Weeks

Nigeria’s $20 billion Dangote refinery has temporarily shut down its petrol-producing unit following catalyst leaks and other technical issues, according to a Reuters report on Wednesday.

The affected section, a 204,000 barrels-per-day Residue Fluidised Catalytic Cracking Unit (RFCCU), has been offline since August 29, industry tracker IIR Energy disclosed.

Two industry sources confirmed the development but asked not to be identified, while Dangote Group has yet to issue an official statement.

Repairs on the unit are expected to last at least two weeks, raising questions over short-term supply even as the facility has quickly become a key player in reshaping global oil and fuel trade since it commenced operations last year.

Despite the setback, the refinery is pressing ahead with export plans. Its first shipment of petrol to the United States is expected to dock in New York later this month, according to vessel-tracking data from Kpler.
