Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the president of Nigeria, has just been named to serve as chair of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government for the upcoming year at the ECOWAS Summit in Guinea Bissau.
He succeeds President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau.
Due to alleged anomalies, two opposition political parties, the PDP and the Labour Party, are currently suing Tinubu’s election victory in February 2023.
Following a precedent created in 2020 when Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo was elected similarly while the legal challenge to his electoral victory was also pending, Tinubu was chosen to serve as the rotating chair of the ECOWAS.
What does this indicate about the selection of leaders in West Africa at a time when democracy is allegedly in decline?
