President Bola Tinubu has granted approval for the Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan to be upgraded to international status.
This development follows a request from Governor Seyi Makinde, who sought federal government support to elevate the airport’s status.
Governor Makinde announced the approval on Wednesday, June 26, during a courtesy visit from the Chief of Air Staff of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Air Marshall Hassan Baba Abubakar, at the Governor’s Office, State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
Makinde assured that work on the project would begin as soon as all necessary documentation is finalized with the Presidency. He also called for the involvement of Air Force personnel to ensure the upgraded airport meets required operational standards.
In his remarks, Air Marshall Abubakar urged Governor Makinde to expedite the ongoing construction of the 10-kilometer Ajia-Airport road to facilitate the movement of personnel relocating to the Air Force base. He also requested compensation for residents of the Ajia Airforce Base to avoid disruptions to the Force’s activities.
The Chief of Air Staff is in Ibadan as part of an operational tour of Air Force formations across the country.
