The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has deployed 120 specially trained Aviation Security (AVSEC) officers to international airports across the country. This elite force, trained to bear arms, is part of FAAN’s initiative to enhance security at Nigeria’s key gateways.
Speaking at the commissioning of 30 officers at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, FAAN MD/CEO Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku highlighted the significance of this deployment. “This is a remarkable step for us as we align Nigeria’s aviation security with global standards,” she stated.
Kuku emphasized the critical role of the new security personnel in protecting airport assets and ensuring the safety of passengers and staff. “These officers are highly professional and will work closely with other security agencies,” she added.
Addressing concerns about the use of excessive force, Kuku reassured passengers that the armed personnel are trained to act with restraint and professionalism. “Their primary role is to complement our existing security staff,” she noted.
The deployment will initially focus on five international airports: Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu. “This is a significant milestone for us,” Kuku said. “Our officers are well-prepared and ready to serve.”
She expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, and the National Security Adviser for their support in achieving this security enhancement.
