The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is reportedly making efforts to resolve its growing dispute with national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo following his surprise departure from the team’s camp.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, cited by GOAL, FPF officials are planning to meet with Ronaldo next week, with the player’s agreement, in an effort to restore relations and bring him closer to head coach Jorge Jesus.
The reported move marks a shift in the Federation’s approach after Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen earlier this week, sparking questions over his future with the national team.
Marca reports that the FPF is keen to resolve the disagreement and prevent the incident from bringing Ronaldo’s international career to an abrupt end.
Federation officials are also said to believe that Ronaldo deserves a respectful and dignified ending to his international career in recognition of his significant contribution to Portuguese football.
Following his departure from camp, the FPF initially played down the situation and maintained its focus on the team’s sporting commitments.
“The entire delegation remains fully focused on the national team’s upcoming commitments and achieving the defined objectives,” the Federation said in a statement.
Ronaldo, however, indicated that he would later reveal the reasons behind his decision to leave the camp.
“In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that motivated me to leave the national team to which I have always dedicated myself,” he said in a social media post.
“Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my teammates, without exception, good luck.”
The 41-year-old reportedly left the camp after tensions developed around his situation under Jesus. Portugal subsequently defeated Denmark 4-2 in the Nations League without Ronaldo, although his absence remained a major talking point surrounding the team.
With the FPF now reportedly seeking renewed dialogue between Ronaldo, Jesus and the national team, next week’s proposed meeting could play a significant role in addressing the dispute and determining the next stage of the veteran forward’s international career.
