The Federal Government has designated Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday nationwide as Nigeria celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the holiday on behalf of the government, extending congratulations to Nigerians at home and abroad on the milestone. The declaration was formalized in a statement issued Wednesday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
In his remarks, Tunji-Ojo commended Nigerians’ resilience and hospitality, pointing to the country’s human capital and natural resources as key strengths that position it as a leading voice in Africa. He emphasized that peace and political stability are essential to achieving lasting economic growth, urging citizens across the country’s regions to honor the legacy of Nigeria’s founding leaders by embracing the same spirit of selfless service.
