PORT HARCOURT: The Rivers State House of Assembly has voted its support for the bill seeking to create state police in Nigeria, adding its voice to a growing list of state legislatures endorsing the proposal.
The endorsement follows the National Assembly’s transmission of the 1999 Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026 to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.
If passed, the bill would move Nigeria away from its single, centralised police structure to a dual policing model made up of the Federal Police Service and State Police Services.
Rivers joins other state assemblies that have already backed the initiative, including Ogun and Nasarawa States.
Under the constitutional amendment process, the bill must be approved by at least two-thirds of the state assemblies, that is, 24 of the 36 states, before it can proceed to presidential assent.
