The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed concern over his safety ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he is uncertain whether he will be alive by the time Nigerians go to the polls.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, where he spoke about the political climate ahead of the elections.
The former Anambra State governor said he had been petitioned and investigated in several places, adding that he was unsure of what could happen to him before the 2027 election.
“As I speak to you, I have also been petitioned, I’ve been investigated everywhere. Like I said before, I’m not even sure whether I’ll still be alive at the end of this,” Obi said.
He said he was relying on God for protection and appealed to politicians to ensure a peaceful and democratic environment ahead of the elections.
“I’m praying to God for His protection because at this stage, I’m not sure what is happening,” he added.
Obi also called on state governors to allow presidential candidates and other political aspirants to campaign freely in their states, regardless of their political affiliations.
According to him, governors have the right to support candidates of their choice but should also create an environment where other candidates can freely participate in political activities.
“Some of them will be campaigning for presidency tomorrow. They will be campaigning for other offices tomorrow. Let’s have peace,” he said.
Obi recalled his tenure as governor of Anambra State, saying he allowed politicians from other parties to campaign in the state even when they were supporting candidates opposing him.
He urged political actors to uphold democratic principles and ensure that the 2027 electoral process is conducted in a peaceful and inclusive atmosphere.
