Rabiu Kwankwaso, vice presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), says the party will reinstate fuel subsidy in a modified form should it win the January 2027 presidential election.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV, the former Kano State governor described President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the subsidy on his first day in office as a costly misstep that has left Nigeria’s economy in disarray.
Kwankwaso argued that subsidy could be reintroduced without reverting to the old, widely criticized system, and pointed to alternative approaches the NDC would pursue if given the mandate.
“We’re bringing back fuel subsidy in our own way. There are so many ways to do that. Now we have a refinery built by a businessman, and I am sure more will be built,” he said, referencing the Dangote Refinery. “If individuals in this country can build a refinery, I see no reason why the government will not build refineries.”
He added that the NDC’s economic plan centers on expanding local refining capacity and pursuing measures aimed at driving down fuel prices nationwide.
“We in the NDC will do all it takes to put the price of oil down,” Kwankwaso said.
