Nigeria’s Crude Oil Output Hits 11-Month High, Surpasses OPEC Quota in May

Nigeria recorded its highest crude oil production in 11 months in May 2026, with output rising to 1.70 million barrels per day (bpd), according to the latest data released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The figure exceeds the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) production quota of 1.5 million bpd allocated to Nigeria, underscoring a significant improvement in the country’s oil production performance.

NUPRC data showed that combined crude oil and condensate production remained strong throughout the month, fluctuating between a low of 1.51 million bpd and a peak of 1.86 million bpd.

The May output represents Nigeria’s highest production level since July 2025, when the country recorded 1.71 million bpd.

Among the major production streams, Bonny Terminal emerged as the highest contributor, producing 293,870 bpd. It was closely followed by Forcados Terminal with 289,900 bpd, while Qua Iboe ranked third with 173,360 bpd. Escravos contributed 135,470 bpd during the period under review.

Odudu (Amenam Blend) completed the top five production streams, accounting for 63,250 bpd in May.

The NUPRC attributed the increase in production to operational stability across key oil facilities and pipelines, noting that no significant outages were recorded during the month.

The latest production figures are expected to boost government revenue and strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s oil sector as efforts continue to sustain output growth and attract further investment into the upstream industry.
