The House of Representatives has reaffirmed that the electronic transmission of election results is compulsory, following the passage of relevant provisions by the National Assembly.
Spokesman of the House, Hon. Akin Rotimi, stated this on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television, monitored by DAILY POST. He emphasized that the mandate is clearly outlined in the recently passed Electoral Act Amendment provisions.
Rotimi explained that while the House passed a version of the bill in December, the Senate passed a slightly different version. “As per Senate rules and House standing orders, a joint committee was required to harmonize the provisions, comprising members from both chambers,” he said.
He noted that during the committee’s deliberations, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the electoral timetable. “Transmission of election results electronically is mandatory. The law stipulates that presiding officers must electronically transmit results from their polling units to the IREV portal,” Rotimi added.
Tuesday’s House proceedings were reportedly rowdy as lawmakers debated a motion seeking to rescind the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment bill.
This clarification underscores the National Assembly’s commitment to ensuring transparency and efficiency in the upcoming elections.
