The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed excitement over the defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, to the party.

In a statement shared on its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, the ADC officially welcomed Obi, describing him as a valued addition to the party and affirming that he enjoys equal rights and privileges like every other member.

“We are delighted to officially welcome the former two-term Governor of Anambra State and Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General Election, Mr Peter Obi, into our party, the ADC,” the statement read.

DAILY POST reports that Obi defected to the ADC alongside several prominent political leaders from the South-East region.

Speaking on his decision, Obi said his move to the ADC was driven by a desire to help transform and rescue Nigeria from its current challenges. He also pledged that the opposition would lawfully and legitimately resist any attempt to rig the 2027 general election, stressing the need to protect democracy and the will of the people.

Obi’s defection is seen as a significant boost for the ADC as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 polls.
