The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has appealed to the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a video message on Sunday, Azuta-Mbata argued that the government stood to gain nothing by continuing to hold Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021.
Calling for a political solution to the protracted crisis, the Ohanaeze leader stressed that the Federal Government must prioritize Kanu’s welfare and allow him access to proper medical treatment.
“The government has no serious advantage in keeping him. It is important that the government ensure his safety and welfare and allow him to get medical treatment as quickly as possible,” he said.
Azuta-Mbata also used the opportunity to urge Ndigbo across Nigeria to participate actively in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
“I am calling upon every Igbo, wherever you are in Nigeria, to quickly take advantage of the voters’ registration exercise. Don’t play with it. Go and get your card as quickly as possible,” he advised.
He emphasized that dialogue, not prolonged detention, remained the best path to resolving the issue surrounding Kanu and IPOB.
