JUST IN: FG appoints Nwabuoku to oversee Office of the Accountant-General

The newly appointed Accountant General of Federation, Mr. Anamekwe Chukwunyere Nwabuoku has been reported to also be under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) just like his predecessor, Mr. Ahmed Idris.

Mr. Anamekwe Chukwunyere was appointed by the Federal Government to oversee the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) pending the outcome of an investigation into the alleged embezzlement of N80bn by Mr. Ahmed Idris.

However, a new report on Monday revealed that the acting AGF had corruption allegations against him including alleged overpayment to himself in previous government agencies he served.

It was further alleged that some of the properties he acquired fraudulently had been recovered by the anti-corruption agencies.

One of the sources told newsmen that one of Nwabuoku’s financial crimes was allegedly committed while he was the Director of Finance and Accounts (DFA) at the Ministry of Defence.

He was also allegedly involved in other fraudulent activities and using the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS) to siphon the salaries of federal government staff.

The GIFMIS is an IT-based system for budget management and accounting. It was adopted as part of a wider Public Service Reform Strategy by the federal government of Nigeria starting in the early 2000s.

A request was put out to the Presidency to explain why Nwabuoku was chosen to oversee the AGF office, a top official in the Presidency said Nwabuoku was the most senior official in the office.

“He is not acting AGF but overseeing OAGF as the most senior director in the office,” the official declared.

Mr. Ahmed Idris is facing allegations in connection with the diversion of funds and money laundering activities to the tune of N80billion (Eighty Billion Naira) only.

After failing to honour several invitations by the EFCC, he was arrested on Monday, May 16, 2022 and has thereafter been suspended from office.
